Production of PM Wrought Machining Bars and Wires for Machining on Swiss Automatic Lathes

An industrial project aimed at the replacement of cast-wrought S and Pb containing free-machining steels used in Swiss automatic lathes with Pb-free PM wrought steels to produce high-precision parts for the watch, automotive, medical, dental, and instrumentation industries has now been favorably concluded. Several one metric ton vacuum induction melted heats of a low S, high C 1095 type steel and an AISI 431 type martensitic, nitrogen-alloyed 1.4057 stainless steel have been gas atomized, consolidated via hot isostatic pressing, hot worked and then cold drawn into 0.5 to 5 mm diameter machining bar and wire. The machining of these products was very successful, leading to significantly lower part production cost, closer tolerances (IT 4-5; typically < ± 1-2 urn) and improved finished part surface conditions (Ra < 0.10 urn). These two powder metallurgy steels are now standards for many critical industrial applications. This paper discusses the work performed to develop these products of which patents are pending.
