OEMs like ALSTOM are facing a fast-changing world and a very complex multilayeredrnenergy market. The market can be sub-divided in many ways and the subsegmentsrnhave different buying criteria, which affect the manufacturers design criteriarnand development approach in order to deliver products to specific customerrnrequirements.rnThe first part of this paper focuses on the needs of the distributed power customer in thernsmall market-size segment (30-90MW). These particular customers require operationalrnflexibility (Island Mode etc.), multiple fuel operation, proven experienced solutions andrnabove all high reliability and of course low first cost ($/kWh). They have differentrnrequirements to a typical utility or IPP, where Cost of Electricity is the key driver.rnFor industrial customers, steam production capability is also valuable in co-generationrnapplications. A perfect fit of electricity supply and steam over a wide range of operatingrnregimes is a clear advantage but not normally achievable, therefore operationalrnflexibility of gas turbine and plant are key attributes for these customers.rnThe second part of the paper puts a focal point on gas turbines that could suit theserndistributed power needs. The question to be answered is: How does the industrial needsrnshape the development and testing approach of a gas turbine OEM? What are possiblernsolutions to suit the needs of tomorrow’s industrial customer?rnWithin the small segment, robust heavy-duty E-class engines with moderate firingrntemperatures have sold best, with one product being clear the market leader in the pastrntwo decades. However, competition and choice are healthy economical drivers. Thisrnpaper analyzes the reason for the continuous success of E-class technology, usingrnALSTOM's GT8C2 as an example.
