In this work, we explored the effect of using various levels of SMS, with and without the casing layer, as ingredients in compost formulations on mushroom yield. SMS (after harvest of 3 breaks of mushrooms and steaming off to kill unwanted pests) was obtained from the Mushroom Test Demonstration Facility (MTDF) of The Pennsylvania State University. The casing layer was either included or removed from the SMS prior to use. In Crop I, up to 15% SMS (including the casing layer), incorporated at time of filling the tunnel for phase II composting, could be added to compost without a significant effect on mushroom yield (compared to the control). In Crop 2, SMS (including the casing layer; 20% dw) added at build (beginning of phase I composting) did not significantly affect mushroom yield, while SMS (including the casing layer; 20% dw) added at time of phase II tunnel fill resulted in a significant reduction in mushroom yield (81% BE) compared to the control (91% BE). In Crop 3, SMS (casing removed; 20% dw), added at either build (74% BE) or at fill (72% BE), resulted in a significant increase in mushroom yield compared to the control (69% BE). It would appear that SMS, with the casing layer included, may be added to compost at up to 15% of the dw without loss of mushroom yield. Alternatively, up to 20% SMS (with the casing layer removed prior to use) may be added to mushroom compost with a significant increase in mushroom yield.
