β-tubulin gene sequences for 5' Xianghui' strains paired with cultivated Tremella fuciformis Berk and 4 Xianghui strains isolated from the wild were analyzed in this paper. The results showed that there was little difference among the 5 cultivated Xianghui strains. However, there's significant difference among the 4 wild Xianghui strains, and between the wild strains and cultivated strains. The results of p-tubulin sequence alignment showed that the 5 cultivated strains were clustered into one branch, and they were most similar with Annulohypoxylon stygium. There was a significant differentiation among the 4 wild strains. Strain N and strain TBM were clustered into one branch, showed a certain genetic difference from strain TRP06 and had a closer genetic relationship with Annulohypoxylon bovei. Otherwise, strain FANG was most distant to other three wild strains but had a relatively close relationship with Annulohypoxylon nitens. Consequently, the traditional Tremella fuciformis Berk companion fungi (Xianghui strains), which have feathery feature and produce melanin, were not a single species. It contained other species which belonged to the genus Annulohypoxylon and can not be paired with Tremella fuciformis Berk to help them generate fruit body.
