Our group has conducted some studies to search for anti-dementia compounds from medicinal mushrooms since 1991. A series of benzyl alcohol derivatives named as hericenones C to H, as well as a series of diterpenoid derivatives named as erinacines A to I were isolated from the mushroom Hericium erinaceum. These compounds remarkably induced the synthesis of NGF in vitro and/or in vivo. In a recent study, we isolated dilinoleoyl-phosphatidylethanolamine from the mushroom, which protected against neuronal cell death caused by amyloid-peptide toxicity, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, or oxidation stress.
