Organizations need to achieve their goals in the presence of an uncertain environment.rnCoping with this uncertainty requires for organizations to be able to handle unexpectedrnchanges in such an environment, This requires for them to be adaptable, that is, to be ablernto make the necessary changes in the way they function, so as to cope successfully withrntheir environment. Due to the introduction of new or different kinds of informationrntechnology, the development of computer-based information systems is another importantrnsource of changes in the way in which organizational functions are implemented. Becausernof the impact that they may have on the ability of an organization to achieve their goalsrnthe evaluation and control of the impact of these changes is of critical importance.rnThe view of organizational functions as the means by which organizational goals can bernachieved helps to focus the development of information systems on the effective supportrnof specific organizational functions. The conceptual distinction between the goals that anrnorganizational function pursues and the organizational unit that realizes it is essential tornthis endeavor. This distinction is particularly useful for the evaluation of the impact thatrnthe introduction of information technology has on the way in which an organizationrnfunctions and on its adaptability.
