In Information Science (IS), as well as other disciplines,rndiscourse analysis has been used to extend the range ofrncontextual data gathered using other research approaches.rnThis form of textual analysis can enrich our understandingrnof complex information practices and contexts, particularlyrnin relation to the ways that society and individuals constructrnunderstandings of various phenomena. However, not allrndiscourse analysis approaches are the same; linguistic,rnFoucouldian, and psycho-social discourse analysis practicesrnvary in their intent and their application. This panel willrnprovide an overview of the discourse analysis methodology,rnincluding how the approach is conducted in variousrndisciplines. By focusing on three projects by IS scholarsrnthat use discourse analysis, the range of data collection andrnanalysis possibilities – including benefits and limitations ofrnthe approach – will be explored. The panel will also discussrnhow discourse analysis can be used in mixed methodsrnstudies, or with research participants engaged in otherrnmethods, to extend the research knowledge in therndiscipline.
