摘要

Our Closing the App Gap research project, examines thernuse of tablets, apps, and e-books in public libraries as a toolrnagainst summer reading loss in primary-grades children inrnunderserved communities. Children in low-incomernfamilies are less likely to meet important readingrnmilestones, and they are particularly likely to suffer fromrnsummer reading loss, the setback of skills over the longrnsummer vacation. As we already know, this loss can bernaddressed by summer reading programs in public libraries.rnAdditionally, as digital media grows in importance, thernresource disparity between affluent families and lowerincomernfamilies becomes even more pronounced, with arndigital divide effect that shapes the experience of emergentrnreaders. One 2011 study indicated that 55% of childrenrneight and younger from families earning $75k or more perrnyear have access to a smartphone, iPod/phone, or tablet, rnwhile in families earning $30,000 or less, only 22% ofrnchildren have similar access. With apps a growing part ofrnthe educational landscape, increased access isrnadvantageous.rnThis approach brings new tools in the fight against summerrnreading loss, enhances technological literacy, and mitigatesrnthe effect of the digital divide on children in lower-incomernfamilies. Our poster will discuss the various aspects of ourrnresearch, including: our greatest challenges, the creation ofrna model that can help other public libraries use apps andrntablets with children, our proposed multi-site project thatrnbuilds on what we’ve learned, and the potentialrnramifications of closing the digital divide and improvingrnliteracy for every child.
