Software packages form an integral part of the practicesrnof most building design professionals today. Studies inrnthe UK show that CAD is used in 81% of architecturalrnpractices [11. However, these packages fali short ofrnideal when it comes to data exchange.rnThe objective of the COMBINE project is torndemonstrate a solution to this problem based on therndeveloprnent of an Integrated Building Design Systemrn(IBDS) [2]. This solution revolves around twornprincipies, namely (a) the developrnent of arncentralised. Building data model and (b) the integration.rnOf existing software applications with this data modelrnto form the IBDS. At the conclusion of the project, thisrnpaper discusses the authors' work on the integration ofrnthree conunercial packages, DOE-2DX, AutoCAD andrnVENT, into the IBDS.
