SInce 1964, alkoxide-derived hydrated aluminas have been commercially available These alumina dhydrates are recovered in the form of boehmiteptype powders (AlO(OH) with a defined grade of crystallinity. In the presence of diluted aqueous monovalent acids, boehmite forms colloidal alumina particles (sols). The particle sizes of the dispersed alumina hydrates can be adjusted in the nanometer range from below 30 to 500 nm. Some properties of these liquid alumina systems (sols), e.g. translucency, charge or particle diameter, are determinedby the crystallinity of the starting boehmite alumina powder. Application examples are given to show that such materials are already used commercially for colloidal sol-gel processes and meet with increasing interest for other applications.
