Identifying the subset of a software system that is affectedrnby a change task is an essential part of software maintenancernand is traditionally addressed through model-sourcerncode tracing. However, due to the high costs associatedrnwith practicing traceability procedures, producing traceablernsystems is often not regarded as a feasible option inrnthe software industry. As a cost-effective alternative to establishingrnand maintaining low-level trace information onrnsoftware systems, we propose to improve maintainabilityrnof software systems through the regularity property of arnsystem’s source code, which can be achieved by consistentlyrnobserving a set of design rules, called requirementcomponentrntraceability rules, throughout the system. Tornunderstand how this form of design uniformity in a system’srnsource code influences maintainability, we conductedrnan empirical study of five developers performing variousrnchange subset identification tasks on two functionallyrnequivalent sets of source codes with different degrees ofrnregularity. High regularity is shown to significantly improvernsoftware maintainability. We express our findings asrna number of detailed hypotheses and a theory of the effectsrnof source code regularity.
