To investigate the propagation behavior of Rayleigh surface waves along the surface of a functionally graded material (FGM) half space, both coordinate transformation method and power series technique are employed for the asymptotic analytical derivations. By considering three basic FGM graded variation models, the propagation properties, including dispersion relations, mode analysis, attenuation tendency along depth, and characters of particles displacements trajectory are discussed. Results obtained indicate that coupled Rayleigh waves can propagate at the surface of an FGM half space, their dispersion relations, attenuation tendency and the direction of particles displacements motion at the free surface are dependent upon the graded variation tendency of the material parameters; there is not only one mode when the material bulk shear wave velocity increase along depth direction. These results may provide theoretical guidance for nondestructive evaluation (NDT) of FGM in engineering applications as well as the explanation of some seismic wave propagation phenomenon.
