A pilot study of direct physicochemical treatment of waste-waters using ozone is described. The pilot plant consisted of three principal elements, a chemical clarification unit, an ozone contact section, and a dual media filter. The chemical clarification unit removed up to 95% of the suspended solids in the raw sewage feed. The ozone contact section consisted of four spray contactors. These were generally sufficient to reduce the soluble BOD,- by 40%. The filter served to polish the effluent by removing the last traces of suspended solids.rnThe amount of ozone needed to reduce the BOD_5 and TOD in the chemical clarification unit effluent to acceptable levels was found to depend principally on the initial TOD and to be a weaker function of other variables. Treatment with 8 ozone contact stages resulted in an effluent with a BOD_5 of 16 mg/1.rnThe cost of the ozone process was 17% higher than direct physico-chemical treatment with activated carbon. However credit was not allowed for the disinfection and aeration which occured during ozonation.
