During the fabrication of plate girders undesirable stresses and deformations developrnmainly as a result of uneven temperature distributions. These stresses and deformationsrn(imperfections) may signiu0002cantly affect the performance (e.g. ultimate strengthrnor fatigue life) of the structure. In the research described in this paper an effectivernnumerical method to predict these imperfections is developed with the objective of incorporatingrnthis knowledge into the design procedures. This paper presents the backgroundrnof the research including the difu0002culties in numerical welding simulation, thernnumerical solution strategy and the current state of the development illustrated withrnexamples.
