摘要

Although computer-based information systems have been in use in organizations for more than 30 years, little is known about the process of implementing such systems. Reports on implementation have been primarily anecdotal and the few models which have emerged from the relevant literatures generally describe what should happen during implementation, not what actually does happen. This paper describes a longitudinal study, in progress, of the process of implementing an automated library system in a three-college consortium. While emphasis is on the method used to conduct this study, preliminary results also are reported.rnPrevious research in organizational behavior and technology in organizations indicates that implementation may be a cyclical process of mutual adaptations of the organization to the technology and the technology to the organization. As a technology is found by members of the organization to be difficult to use or inadequate for their use, the design of that technology might be altered to render it more useable and useful. And, as that changed technology is put into use, alterations to the organization's structure, both formal and informal, might be required to optimize its use.rnA grounded theory approach is used here to gather and analyze empirical data from participants in the implementation process as that process unfolds over a 12- to 18-month period. Data are being collected from repeated interviews with, and observations of, participants in the process. Themes and issues which have begun to emerge from this data are described. Ultimately, this qualitative data will be coded to describe events occurring during the process and to prepare for a phase analysis which will identify sequences, stages, or cycles in the process. From this analysis, a model of the implementation process will be derived.
