摘要

An insight into wood tissue characteristics prior to its machining can be obtained by utilisation of different techniques of non-destructive testing. The choice should be primarily based on the criterion of cost-benefit ratio, taking into account also the factors of time necessary for tests and field applicability. The method utilising a portable gamma-ray source and a Geiger-Mueller counter has been applied in laboratory conditions for determinations of gamma-ray absorption coefficient in wood of several deciduous softwood species. Results might be of importance in characterising the wood tissue and also in detecting possible faults, which might greatly influence the machining process.
