Recent reports by Environment Canada and the US Environmental Protection Agency have highlighted the potential of the combustion of petroleum products as a significant source for air-borne mercury pollution. Atmospheric mercury is of concern both because of its toxicity and persistence. Mercury can remain in the atmosphere for years and be transported to ecosystems far from their point of origin, such as in Canada's Arctic. With the data on mercury concentrations in petroleum conflicting and contradictory, Environment Canada, in partnership with Canadian Petroleum Products Institute and the majority of the Canadian refineries, has undertaken a survey of the average total mercury concentration in crude oil processed in Canadian refineries. This paper presents preliminary results of the total mass of mercury present in crude oil processed in Canada annually, the potential upper limit of the sum of total mercury in all refined products. This information will be used to determine the significance of vehicle exhaust emissions to the overall Canadian mercury emissions budget. Samples of crude oil have been collected from refineries for crude types covering approximately 70% of the total crude volume processed in Canada in 2002. Over 30 Canadian crude types have been collected and analysed in the study. The total mercury concentration in each sample is quantitated by two techniques: high temperature combustion followed by cold vapour atomic absorption (CVAA) and cold vapour atomic fluorescence (CVAF) detection. Preliminary distributions of total mercury concentrations in 80 oil samples are reported in the present work. Good agreement is demonstrated between the two analytical techniques.
