Bulk Synthesis and Characterization of Carbon Nanocapsules Containing Lanthanum Carbide

TEM complemented by ED, EDX and TGA has been used to estimate the optimized condition for the bulk synthesis of carbon nanocapsules containing lanthanum carbide. Higher concentration (1.45 atom%) of La_2O_3 in anode gave, (1) lower arc temperature due to the energy consumption of arc-discharge for reduction of La oxide, (2) more nanocapsules stuffed with LaC_2. And higher arc current density for lower concentration (0.65 atom%) of La_2O_3 in anode gave higher arc temperature, which caused phase separation of carbon and La in arc plasma, forming more graphite sheets and naked LaC_2 particles. Therefore better condition for their mass synthesis will be achieved by controlling arc temperature and La concentration. TGA results revealed that LaC_2 carbon nanocapsules decompose around 500 - 550℃ in air.
