The use of fast rise time switching devices, such as IGBT's, have provided many benefits for modern PWM drives. However, the use of these devices alos has produced some less desirable effects which should be understood by the user. THis presentation will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the IGBT rpoduced waveform. Typical PWM inverter circuit arrangement, waveforms and rise times will be discussed. Equations relating to the reflected wave phenomenon will be presented. Motor winding construction and failure modes will be discussed. Recommendations will be presented.
