摘要

The present study examined the relative contributions social support and religious support (emotional support received, emotional support provided, negative interaction, and anticipated support) to physical and emotional functioning, in a national sample of African American adults. African American men and women (N=803) were interviewed by telephone. The national sample was recruited using probability-based methods. Participants completed a 30-minute interview and for doing so received a S25.00 gift card in the mail. Hierarchical linear regressions revealed that religious social support made a significant contribution above and beyond general social support to the prediction of both physical and emotional functioning. Specifically, negative interaction was associated with poorer functioning. For men, negative interaction made a marginal contribution to physical functioning beyond general social support. For women, negative interaction made a significant contribution to emotional functioning beyond general social support. Models were controlled for age, sex, education, and health status. The unique contribution of religious social support to physical and emotional functioning highlights the specific role that religious support plays in people's lives. Implications of findings for the emotional functioning of African American women are discussed.
