A set of forty pollinators and thirteen male sterile lines of forage pearl millet from different background were grown in the Kharif season of the year 2001. Male sterile lines were replicated two times in the augmented design fashion. Nine quantitative forage characters including stover yield were studied. Male sterile lines were used as checks. Results indicated that the pollinators invariably exceeded the checks. Different groups based on critical differences formed within the pollinators indicated sufficient variability in the materials for different characters. Analysis of variance for male steriles indicated variances due to days to 50% flowering, plant height, number of leaves; ear length and stover yield to be significant. Partitioning of gross variance into genetic and environmental components revealed preponderance of genotypic variance for all the characters except for stem girth. Values of Correlation coefficients revealed substantial correlations between days to 50% flowering and leaf length, earlength and leaf length, earlength and leaf width, leaf length and leaf width, leaf width and stover yield and stem girth and stover yield. Path coefficient analysis indicated maximum direct effects of plant height, tiller number and stem girth on stover yield. Indirect effects of leaf width via stem girth and tiller number via stem girth also showed substantial value affecting stover yield.
