The efficiency of Aspergillus terreus and Zymomonas mobilis in fermenting sugar beet pulp as monocultures or mixed culture was compared by measuring the changes in pH, biomass, sucrose, reducing sugars and ethanol. For mixed culture or coculture studies Z. mobilis was inoculated into a 24h culture of A. terreus in 100 ml beet pulp (100b fresh weight/1). The maximum biomass was attained at 64 h of fermentation in A.terreus monoculture, while the biomass of Z.mobilis biomass in monoculture was maximum at 40 h. The biomass of both organisms decreased in co-culture. Sucrose utilization was maximum in the first 8 h of growth in Z.mobilis in monoculture. In A. terreus fermentation sucrose utilization was gradual and the rate of sucrose utilization was maximum between 24 and 32 h of fermentation. In co culture fermentation maximum sucrose utilization was observed 8 h after the introduction of Z.mobilis. Z.mobilis produced maximum ethanol 16 hours earlier than A.terreus. The highest ethanol yield in co-culture was attained at 32 h and it was more efficient than the monoculture experiments producing 4.8g/l ethanol from 100g fresh weight/1 beet pulp with 10.2 % sucrose (96.8% theoretical yield).
