This paper presents a study into permeability of isotropic heterogeneous soils based on the self-consistent method. The reasoning is conducted at a mesoscopic scale so that the Darcy law is valid for any constituent. Several simple modelling approaches are introduced to describe media of different morphology. They enable to understand the essential role of the constituent's connectedness and their respective scales. Applications to permeability assessments are given for soils made of two or hree constituents such as saturated clay, impervious grains and perfectly permeable water pockets. The same principles can also be applied to constituents with finite permeability and the results are valid for any kind of transfer phenomena (thermal conduction, electric, diffusion transport, ...).
