Under court order, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) published arnNotice of Proposed Rulemaking for exposure to hexavalent chromium. This paper provides anrnoverview of the rule's content and proposed actions required by industry. Affected industries,rnactivities, operations and other exposure sources for hexavalent chromium are identified. Thisrnpaper also provides data on the potential impacts of the as-written rule requirements on industryrnin the United States. A synopsis of industry's response to the proposed rule will be presentedrnto inform potentially impacted employers. Finally, a summary of actions to identify potentialrnpersonnel exposures will be presented as a guide to environmental, health and safety managers,rnhazardous material managers and industrial hygienists.
