Our results suggest that the swimming response of the leech depends, in part, on the level of activity in the ventral cord at the time of stimulation, and that the greater the activity, as measured by the signal variance, the more likely it is for the animal to swim. Comparisons of cross-correlation coefficients and mutual information confirms indications in [2] that leech ventral cord signals have significant nonlinear components.
