Significant damage was inflicted on a Visbreaker furnace following power (and backup) failure which, in turn led to tube rupture and a large fire in the furnace firebox. Investigations dealing with the causes of tube ruptures are described in this paper. Included are inspection histories, tools used and findings of creep and fatigue caused by overpressure and overheating during the incident. Metal loss was caused by combinations of sulphur corrosion and thermal fatigue arising during carburisaiton. Conclusions regarding damage mechanisms and recommendations on alternatives for coke removal, the use of new technology for 100% tube wall thickness/ovality and skinpoint temperature measurement are given.
