The report summarizes peculiarities of synthesis and optical properties of the structures xerogel/porous anodic alumina doped with Er, Tb and Eu. Porous anodic alumina is considered as attractive material for sol-gel synthesis from viewpoint of luminescence properties of the structure xerogel/porous anodic alumina. Origin of strong luminescence of lanthanides from xerogels in meso-porous matrices is discussed.
