Underbalanced Drilling (UBD) is a drilling technologycapable of delivering substantial increases in initial wellproductivity and ultimate recovery from oil and gas wells, aswell as a host of other benefits. Petroleum DevelopmentOman (PDO) is exploiting a variety of reservoir types thatcould benefit from this technology. The difficulty in assessingthe performance of a well drilled underbalanced compared to aconventional (overbalanced) well, however, is compounded byreservoir heterogeneity such that even two conventionallydrilled wells relatively close together may deliver substantiallydifferent well initials. Single well trials of UBD in the past inPDO have been expensive, in terms of the relative cost ofmobilising equipment to the Arabian Peninsula, and the resultsinconclusive. A strategy of 'Zero Cost Implementation' wasformulated to avoid these problems. The business benefitsnecessary to 'pay' for the increased cost of UBD weredetermined. As the risk of those returns not being met werelow then a sufficiently long campaign of UBD could bejustified to assess the benefits. The result of this policy wasthe implementation of one and a half string years of UBD(some 20 wells) in two fields (one carbonate, one clastic),which makes it one of the largest campaigns of UBD outsideNorth America. Two UBD packages have been employedfrom two different contractors and the campaign started inMay 2002. Not only have both projects delivered significantincreases in productivity but they have also shown the benefitsof real-time assessment of reservoir productivity while drillingallowing real-time decisions on well operations andcompletion design.
