This paper emphasizes the significance of controlling axial compressive load in moment frame columns in the seismic design of high-rise reinforced concrete buildings. The current prescriptive code provisions (UBC 97[1], ACI 318[2], etc.) do not have specific guidelines to deal with this issue. This design issue deserves more attention than before because of the recent boom of high-rise residential buildings in major cities in California. The axial compressive load in frame columns located at the ends of frames caused by seismic overturning may increase significantly in moment frames with high aspect ratio (height to length ratio). The increase of seismic induced axial load is the result of accumulation of frame beam shear force associated with beam hinging. The detrimental effects of high axial load in the frame columns on the frame behavior are high-lighted by existing test results of columns and beam-columns joints. Several procedures of estimating the demand of axial load in frame columns during a major seismic event are provided and discussed. The variation of column axial load is highlighted through the analysis of an example high-rise moment frame. Recommendations of controlling column axial load through design to avoid the detrimental effects on the frame behavior are provided. In addition, moment curvature analysis is conducted on a column section with constant high axial load to confirm the adequacy of column design.
