The technique of in-depth concentration profiling by Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) has developed into a versatile tool for evaluating the performance of nuclear waste form materials. Several long-term studies of glasses leached in interaction with geological environments have been evaluated with SIMS. Particularly extensive international burial tests of numerous waste forms leached under reaslistic repository conditions have been conducted in Sweden (granite environment), the US (salt & brine), and Belgium (Boom Clay). SIMS profiling quantitatively monitored the in-depth distributions of up to 4- elements, including very small concentrations of simulated nuclear waste, in residual corroded layers and precipitates on leached waste forms of about 25 different compositions. Variations in leachability in dependence of composition were charted, as well as typical elemental differences in kinetic response to leaching in the different geologies of long-term repository.
