Reduction of SF_6 emissions can be achieved in different ways. Concentrating on reduction through technical and technological developments of HV switchgear, containing SF_6 for insulation and/or switching purposes is one way. However, investigations have shown that the majority of the emissions are occurring in any handling stage of the life cycle, from production in the factory to the end of life of switchgear. Capiel and Eurelectric jointly have initiated actions to reduce SF_6 emissions from switchgear produced and installed in the EU, in particular by concentrating on the handling of SF_6. The paper deals with the relative importance and position of SF_6 used in switchgear. A survey is given of actions necessary and initiated to reduce emissions in relation to switchgear. Furthermore emphasis is put on a monitoring methodology developed to demonstrate the results of the actions initiated. With these actions it is possible to reduce switchgear related emission through an appropriate chain management, covering the cradle to grave of the switchgear.
