As the state of the art in traffic models continually progresses, it is importatn that these software packages be integrated into a common platform and have the ability to share data through a common database. By integrating these programs into one platform, it is possible to decouple the traffic engineering aspects of these programs fro mthe software engineering aspects that have long made them difficult to use and unintuitive to traffic engineers. Through the common platform, it is possible to perform detailed design analysis, signal optimization, and capacity analysis with minimal redundancy of data entry. In an effort to develop a standard platform, FHWA has commissioned the continued development of the Traffic software Integrated System, or TSIS.
