Localised deformation develops in undisturbed samples of soft, medium sensitive Kreuzlingen Clay when they are sheared in undrained triaxial extension. The two localisation modes identified were necking and shear banding, with the deformation patterns the samples displayed after the tests indicating that both localisation modes developed simultaneously. Necking is strongly linked to the specific kinematic constraints of the triaxial extension test and does not necessarily hint at an unstable path of the tested soil. Modelling of an undrained plane-strain extension test using the Modified Cam-Clay model with a mixed finite element formulation further illustrates that even the formation of shear bands is not inevitably linked to an unstable path of the material or softening. Although additionally, for pre-peak loads, the behaviour of the Kreuzlingen Clay samples could well be described by a critical state constitutive model, the abrupt softening of these samples in the post-peak stages of the triaxial extension tests then however indicates a marked degradation of the shear strength within the zones of localised shear deformation for this normally consolidated clay.
