Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) utilize new technology such as intelligentcontrollers, global positioning satellites, variable message signs and digital communicationsto advance the capabilities of existing transportation systems. The John A. Volpe NationalTransportation Systems Center is supporting the Federal Railroad Administration indeveloping a demonstration project that will utilize ITS capabilities along with Positive TrainControl capabilities to improve safety at Highway-Rail Intersections. The beginning of thistask included a survey of current activities related to the focus area. This paper will describeresults of the survey, ideas being discussed for a demonstration project and future enablingtechnology.
