摘要

Ensuring sustainability in Australia is critical for economic, social and environmentaldevelopment. A significant amount of work has been conducted in Australia addressingthe issues of climate change mitigation and adaptation through analysis of the impacts ofvehicles on the environment, and climate change implications for transport infrastructureand operations.The paper is divided into two parts. The first part details approaches to reducinggreenhouse gas emissions and some key challenges associated with their adoption. Itidentifies steps towards effectively managing carbon emissions, through the developmentof mitigation projects, such as the Australian Low Carbon Transport Forum.The second part of this paper covers adaptation projects such as an assessment of theimpacts of climate change on road infrastructure, performance and pavementdeterioration; the development of climate change frameworks; an assessment of theimpacts of greenhouse gas emissions on asset management, such as issues associatedwith the use of recycled aggregates for road construction and maintenance. This paperconsiders how these, in combination, form a coherent strategy for addressing greenhousegas emissions, and some key areas for decision-makers to consider.
