The author examines the impact of targeted strength-based and normalizing feedback in a hypothetical counselor supervision setting. The internet-based experimental study identified significant differences in the way a supervisee perceives their respective supervisor when receiving constructive feedback, if the supervisor prefaced the constructive feedback with a strength-based and normalizing statement. The author considers the utility of implementing strength-based techniques in a supervision training setting in order to decrease unnecessary negative supervisory experiences. The internet-based setting of the study limits the external validity of the findings, however the sample (n=186) was drawn from a cross-section of CACREP programs throughout the United States.
