摘要

The most common female malignancy worldwide is breast cancer. The estimated death total in the United States for women with breast cancer in 2012 was 39,510. Breast cancer patients struggle with depression, anxiety, and fear as they cope with their diagnosis and prognosis. Depression, anxiety, and fear hinder gene expression supporting memory and learning. Memory and learning support the biology of hope and meaning. Research studies have documented the efficacy of mind-body medicine modalities to modulate gene expression.;The purpose of this research was to review and analyze an archival study on the effects of the Mind-Body Medicine Epigenetic Technique (MET) on arc and EGR1 (zif 268) gene expression in breast cancer patients. Arc and EGR1 (zif-268) gene expression modulate synaptic growth essential for memory and learning. This research study utilized the pre experimental, One-Shot Case Study research design. The gene expression was measured by DNA microarray results using the PrimeviewTM gene chip and PartekRTM Genomics Suite statistical software. For two subjects from Group 1, there were statistically and biologically significant changes in gene expression. Both subjects from Group 1 evidenced biologically and statistically significant up-regulation of EGR1 gene expression. One subject from Group 2 evidenced biologically significant up-regulation of EGR1. There was no biologically and statistically significant up-regulation of arc gene expression in either group. One subject from Group 1 also evidenced biologically significant up regulation of TP53 gene expression and also evidenced the up-regulation of TP53AIP1 gene expression.;Future MET studies could produce stronger statistical and biological significant results with more participants assessed for high levels of cognitive flexibility. This study provided evidence that research subjects with cognitive flexible abilities responded biologically to the MET intervention. In addition to cognitive flexibility, the research subject's ability to maintain and deepen her internal focus is just as essential. These abilities enable the biological response evidenced by gene expression. The body is able to respond to the sustained mental and emotional state of the research subject.;Keywords: Mind-body medicine, meditation, hypnosis, arc gene expression, EGR1 (zif-268) gene expression, memory, learning, breast cancer.
