The effect of using art history examples on elementary students' perceptions of their drawings.

This study tested the effect art history examples would have on kindergarten, third grade, and sixth grade students when viewed as part of one drawing activity. This quasi-experimental study employed a pretest-posttest control group design for each grade level. The 119 children were surveyed two weeks before a drawing activity and immediately after it. The results of the study showed two statistically significant differences in their perceptions at p .05. Sixth graders who viewed art history examples were less inclined to feel that others appreciated their drawings and more inclined to get ideas from the artwork of others. When data were combined to compare with kindergarteners' surveys, all groups exposed to art examples seemed more inclined to copy than the control groups. No other differences were apparent in areas of enjoyment of drawing, perceived quality of drawing, ability to come up with original ideas, and tendency to copy.
