False Start FalseStart ------ investigates cultural projections of the pastoral to consider the ways in which the primitive both disrupts and helps sustain the domestic. Following the arc of a marriage, it explores the ecstasy of location and the inevitability of transformative loss. Tracking the breakdown of places imagined to be safe, vital, and locating against a traumatic realization of wilderness, False Start FalseStart ------ attempts to stand by collapse as the beginning of a restorative extension that allows us to recognize ourselves within the immensity of what is already underway. In this sense, it is also an attempt to investigate the fact that breakdowns are a matter of perspective. Collapse dissolves borders and restores both the pastoral to the raw, generative energy of the wilderness and the self to what is imagined to be other.;A marriage is a particular location and the end of a marriage is the beginning of another unforeseen location. As False Start FalseStart ----- works to recognize collapse as a part of the health of a larger system, it investigates the ways in which time amplifies our sense of place---the way that memory acts on actual events, and inevitably, presents them. The composition process began by returning to the journals I was writing in during the first weeks after my ex-wife and I were married, years later, as compost. Revisiting these journals, I scored moments that felt particularly interesting, weird, energetic, etc., at gut-level. I also employed aleatory methods of composition, like the cut-up, in order to explore authorship as a matter of participating in the compost itself.;As False Start FalseStart ------ cedes itself to compost, it finds that intention gives way to meaning that builds through a layered attention to details. It finds that the breakdown of the pastoral takes us to the edge of ourselves; by forcing us to leave our homes, it promises to restore us to a wider and more substantial view of nature.
