摘要

This thesis examined current discourse on ecological sustainability regarding the requisites for a more just and sustainable world. The objective was to discover how well the psychological and systemic constraints of a centralized monetary system, that impedes sustainability, are addressed in contemporary discussion. A comparative theoretical analysis utilized archival research to examine: (a) conceptual proposals, (b) monetary proposals, and (c) psychological theories toward creating a sustainable world. The results demonstrated that the centralized monetary system was minimally addressed by conceptual proposals, addressed in some fashion by all monetary system proposals, and not at all addressed by psychological theories. This study introduces a theory of the psychology of sustainability and recommends future research that applies the field of psychology to the study of mutual credit-based monetary systems, in order to better understand their potential for creating a just and more equitable sustainable world and the mindset needed to realize such change.
