The successful design of linear induction motors relies upon the use of three kinds of expertise: design knowledge, modelling knowledge, and evaluation knowledge. Traditional computer-aided design has focused on incorporating modelling knowledge to allow the design engineer to model a device (in this case, the linear induction motor) as accurately as possible, but relying on the engineer to provide the design and design evaluation expertise. This thesis discusses three alternate methods of using these forms of expertise in spreadsheet, expert system and genetic algorithm based approaches. Each approach is implemented as design tools and compared in terms of expertise embodiment and applicability to the design of linear induction motors.; The spread sheet design tool is useful in the hands of an LIM design expert, but is not appropriate for a non expert to use. The expert system design tool consistently generates good designs well within the norm of standard LIM design practice and is an excellent design and teaching aid for experts and non-experts alike. The genetic algorithm tool is a "black box" design tool; able to make intelligent design decisions and balance large numbers of design constraints to create innovative LIM designs that exceed performance criteria.
