摘要

This dissertation evaluated the division of labor, adaptability, cohesion, and marital and family satisfaction among three groups--primary caretaking fathers and their wives, primary caretaking mothers and their husbands, and dual-career couples. The groups were evaluated twice, five years apart. Fifty-one couples with at least one child between the age of six months and four years volunteered for the initial research; 36 couples participated in the follow-up study. The Dyadic Adjustment Scale, the Parents' Division of Labor Checklist, and the FACES III questionnaire were administered at time one and again at time two.;Analyses of variance of the Dyadic Adjustment Scale, which measures marital satisfaction, revealed no differences among the three groups or between the sexes, nor were there any significant interactions between sex and group, either at time one or time two.;In the area of light housework, as assessed by the Division of Labor Checklist, wives' performance across groups did not vary. As predicted, however, primary caretaking mothers did the most heavy housework and the most child care; the wives of primary caretaking fathers did the least heavy housework and the least child care; and the wives in dual-career couples fell in between. Several other predicted differences were found for wives' feelings of responsibility and concern about these tasks.;As for the men in the study, no differences were found among the three groups for their performance of light housework. The primary caretaking fathers, however, did the most heavy housework and the most child care; the husbands of primary caretaking mothers performed the least heavy housework and the least child care; and the husbands in dual-career couples fell in the middle. Several other predicted differences were found for husbands' feelings of responsibility and concern about these tasks.;Predicted group differences for cohesion (connectedness) and adaptability (flexibility), as measured by FACES III, were not found, either at time one or time two, although a moderate decrease in adaptability was noted at time two for all three groups. No support was found for predicted differences in family satisfaction.
