Hybrid methods are developed for determining individual stress components under plane stress from the thermoelastically measured trace of the stress tensor. Mechanical theories are used to develop numerical schemes which use experimental data as input. Most of the techniques require only limited boundary conditions. Some of the techniques depend only on stress equilibrium and are independent of constitutive response. Applications are to a partially-loaded half-plane, and tensile plates containing holes and notches. Results were checked with theory, FEM and other experimental data. Prior to smoothing, the experimental data usually contain unreliable boundary information and are noisy. An accurate complex-variable method is developed to smooth the internal data, enhance boundary information, and separate the stresses simultaneously. The methods are extendable to other experimental techniques.
