摘要

This dissertation is undertaken to add to the growing literature in the new history of sociology. The new aspect is that histories are being based on archival material, examination of the past for its own sake, and connecting sociological work to the larger social setting. These principles guide the selection and approach of this study. The overall intent is to investigate the development of sociology at Columbia University. Special attention is paid to the period when sociology is first introduced as an academic subject and progresses to an established discipline in the Columbia Faculty of Political Science. The time-frame of this period is roughly from 1891 to 1931. Sociology is offered on a part-time basis by Franklin Henry Giddings in 1891 and under his direction Columbia emerges as one of the principal graduate training centers for sociologists in America. Since this forty-year span covers the tenure of Giddings, the core of this work deals with him and his association with the Faculty of Political Science.;Rather than just keeping this dissertation on the descriptive level, the theoretical concern of the institutionalization of an intellectual activity is addressed. A conceptual model of the precondition and postcondition phases a scientific specialty proceeds through is tested by the case of Columbia sociology. This case also lends itself to examining the theoretical issues of cognitive and social development, the influence of the individual and the academic setting, and why at times discontinuity rather than continuity best describes the situation. To keep the findings from remaining on an isolated level, comparison is constantly done with other disciplines at Columbia and with the history of sociology at the University of Chicago.
