Homesick or Sick-of-Home? Examining the Effects of Reentry on Students' Self-Disclosure

This study examines the effects of reverse culture shock on students' reintegration to their home environments after studying abroad. Using the theoretical frameworks of Gullahorn and Gullahorn's (1963) W-Curve and Adler's Reentry Coping Styles (1981), this research looks at students' self-disclosure to re-establish interpersonal relationships with family, friends, and romantic partners. A total of 211 international students who studied abroad and then returned to their home country completed an online questionnaire on reverse culture shock. Results suggest that participants minimize interpersonal distance with their loved ones by paying close attention to what they disclose and how they talk about their experience. Although relationship type is not a strong factor determining personal disclosures, returning students carefully "tailor" their stories based on the topic, the other person's previous experience abroad, interest, and anticipated response. This study indicates that there is a need for future research to examine self-disclosure as a therapeutic instrument dealing with more delicate and traumatic aspects of reverse culture shock, to provide practical resources to students, their families, university programs, and counseling services.
