The purpose of this study was to make a side-by-side comparison of commonly used wells configurations, used for monitoring shallow water tables in different soil textures, to evaluate the best configuration for the determination of wetland hydrology in each soil texture. Five well configurations: Driven; Augered; U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Technical Standard; Constructed Technical Standard; and Constructed Augered were duplicated in sand, muck, loam, clay, and silt loam soil textures. Differences in water movement or response time in different soil textures are well documented in the literature thus no attempt was made in this study to compare well configurations among soil textures.;This study showed no significant difference in the response to water table fall or rise among well configurations within any of the five textures. However, three well configurations: Driven; Augered; and Constructed Augered; failed during one test in clay and four well configurations: Driven; Constructed Augered; Technical Standard; and Constructed Technical Standard) failed during one test in loam texture soils. Other than in the loam textured soil, the well configuration that followed the Technical Standard (TS) performed most consistently in all soil textures studied.;Key words: water table, wells, hydrology
