Suburban development is characterized by a low-density form, reliance on automobiles, and general cookie-cutter appearance that does not create an accessible, inviting, or sustainable landscape. Many suburban residents are not aware of the impact their lifestyle and built environment has on the surrounding landscape. Yet, development causes problems with water quality and capacity with the increase in stormwater runoff, and it reduces biodiversity by carving up natural habitat, thereby putting the health of humans and natural communities at risk. In addition, suburban development has created a reliance on industrial agriculture, and this system of food production is energy-intensive, unsustainable, and detrimental to the natural environment. While academics and policy-makers have offered solutions to suburban sprawl and urban environmental degradation, these solutions do not address the already-built suburban environment. Thus, suburban residents and communities must come to understand the issues created by suburban development in order to create a landscape that functions in a pre-development state.

The collaborations analysed span academia, civil society and government, from the grassroots to the national and global levels.
