摘要

Monastic building projects in and around Orbais at the end of the twelfth century represent a particular iteration of Gothic style and technological achievement. That architecture also speaks to the aspirations of the brothers who built and lived in the monastery as well as their relationship to the world around them. Integrated art historical, anthropological, and archaeological approaches offer avenues of investigation that help elucidate the close connection between architectural forms and the expressive content generated through their use by human actors. Substantial evidence survives at Orbais from the monastery, its church, core complex, and surrounding monastic village as well as patterns of property holding patronage and other negotiations in the wider regional landscape. Conceptual and physical landscapes are frameworks for understanding the parameters within which the monks of Orbais made decisions about how to build, modify, and use their architectural spaces.;The monks of Orbais, whose institutional life stretched back to the end of the seventh century, were seeking to clarify their position in the changing social landscapes of the twelfth century. In my dissertation, I explore the ways in which a modest community used an ambitious and monumental building campaign to reinforce these efforts. Furthermore, by comparison with the other monastic houses in the region. I suggest elements of a distinctively monastic architecture that combines Gothic design and reform aesthetics into an expression of the particular community that built and worshiped at Orbais.;The chapters of my dissertation divide the discussion up into units of increasing geographical size, starting with the church as the focal point of both the monastery and the spiritual life of the monks. From there, the following chapter widens perspective to include the cloistral buildings with were physically, visually and conceptual integral with the church. That chapter goes on to include a discussion to the entire monastic precinct and its place within the monastic village. Systems of water exploitation and management tied the monastery directly to regional economic and environmental landscapes and are the topic of the fourth chapter. The fifth chapter treats the regional landscapes themselves, both as geological and ecological systems and as overlapping zones of human control and social interaction.
