Although "it" is a small word in English, it is used very freely. It can be used as a personal pronoun, an impersonal pronoun, a demonstrative pronoun and an antecedent (playing a role of formal subject and fonnal object). It can also be used in the fixed sentence pattern "emphatic structure" which can emphasize every certain element of a sentence.
