In rumen experiments, although nitrogen gas(N ) flushing has been widely used, its effects on rumenfermentation characteristics are not clearly determined. The present study isthe first to evaluate the effects of N flushing on rumenfermentation characteristics in batch culture systemby comparing with new applicable non-metabolizable gas: argon (Ar). The rumenfluid was taken from two Korean native heifers followed by incubation for 3, 9,12, and 24 h with N or Ar flushing. As a result, in all incubationtime, N flushing resulted in higher total gas production than Arflushing ( < 0.01). Additionally, in N flushing group, ammonia nitrogen was increased ( <0.01). However, volatile fatty acids profiles and pH were not affected by theflushing gases ( > 0.05). In conclusion, the presentstudy demonstrated that N flushing can influence the rumen nitrogenmetabolism via increased ammonia nitrogen concentration and Ar flushing can beused as a new alternative flushing gas.
